Blinds are curtains are a great addition to any home because they can:

  • Regulate temperature

  • Reduce outside noise

  • Control lighting of rooms

  • Increase privacy in homes

And while nearly all Australian homes have curtains, blinds, shutters, or all of the above, there are safety risks involved.

Blind and curtain laws and standards Australian homeowners and renters need to be meeting

When installed incorrectly, blinds and curtains can pose risks to both children and adults.

That’s why the Australian and State governments impose several strict laws on the installation and maintenance of curtains and blinds.

Some of the laws relevant include:

Note that these are only two sections that homes must be compliant with. For more recent information and accurate advice, contact us.

Also, note that laws and regulations are subject to change and may be updated from time to time and that new laws are being developed often.

Always check with your state’s government and the Federal Register of Legislation for up-to-date legislation and regulations for your state’s fittings and fixtures.

Legal requirements when installing blinds, curtains and shutters

Before installing curtains, blinds, and shutters, always thoroughly check for more recent laws and regulations or contact your local experts.

Don’t just read the box and instructions

Even if the packaging of your purchased product states installation requirements, there may have been more recent developments to laws and legislation.

Keep blinds and curtain cords out of reach

Blinds and curtain cords are the greatest risks involved with window coverings in homes. To meet standards and ensure your home is as safe as it can be:

  • Make sure children can’t reach blinds and curtain cords (including if they climbed on nearby furniture)

  • Secure the cords and make sure they don’t dangle near areas children would be found (near toys, playpens or where they may sit)

Install safety devices on older blinds and curtains

If you have dated blinds, curtains, or other internal window coverings, you likely won’t need to replace them to meet industry standards. Instead, the Queensland government recommends having safety devices installed to minimise the risk of injury.

Some of the following techniques are suggested:

  • Cord tensioning devices like cord holders and wind-ups/

  • Retrofitting blinds and curtain cords with breakaway tassels.

Labelling

Any person installing a corded internal window covering must attach a label to it. This label must contain the installer’s name, contact information, and the company responsible.

It’s the resident’s responsibility to ensure this label and any other warning remain attached to window coverings.
